A Video for all of you!

Just wanna share this video to all of you which summarizes my activities and experiences during the SEA Teacher programme.

It was our Second Semester when I heard the big news I’ve never thought I can hear in my life. I was chosen as one of the five students in our college to represent our university in an exchange program. With the help of our Lord Almighty, my parents, our Dean of the college, Dr. Eliza T. Samson, our university faculty and staff and our advisers it was possible for me to join the program.

It was dawn when we arrived to this beautiful country, Indonesia and we are welcomed by Mr. Purnama and Mr. Komara faculty and staff of UHAMKA our receiving university. After staying for two days at UHAMKA we drove to Bekasi together with my fellow SEA Teacher batch 6, Kayla and Crismae, Bu Ahmel head of the PAUD UHAMKA and our Indonesian buddy Umi. When I went out of the car, I saw a colorful school, that’s when I knew it’s KB/Teka Sabilina our practicum school and in front of it are children who were holding drums together with their teachers with smiles written on their faces. It was a heart-warming welcome and I feel honoured. They even gave us our very own “pashmina. “ They toured us around in the Kindergarten as well as in the Elementary School. After that, we went to see the house that we will be staying. The founder of Sabilina opened the doors of her home to us. I really feel happy and grateful at the same time.

We started our observation the next day. I was assigned to Class Amanah which means trust in Arabic. I handle children with an age range of 5-6 years old. Classes start at 7:15 am and ends at 12:00 noon so we must be at the school before 7:15. Before starting anything, the teachers must always have this early morning circle time where they pray and this will surely help to condition their mind and body. After that, we must prepare the pupils journal in which the pupils draw anything they want and when they are done they must show it to us or the teacher assigned to them and they will tell us what they draw. The journal also serves as their attendance. The challenging part for me is that our pupils used Indonesian terms for the things they draw so I need to ask the teachers to translate it to me. But everyday I’m making progress and little by little I tend to understand the things they are saying. I’m also getting used to the school routine and because of that I can assist the teachers with all my best. The pupils are much disciplined and well organized. They know where to properly put their shoes, they know how to fall in line and they listen well to their teachers. The school uses six centers, which are the dramatic center, blocks center, preparation center, science and nature center, worship center and art and creativity center. The teachers’ activities for the pupils are hands-on, that way the pupils are learning by doing.

My teaching and assisting period are one of the highlights of my stay here. This period is really enjoyable. It’s fun to really engage myself in talking to the pupils as well as to the teachers. Of course there is a language barrier but that can’t stop me from doing my duties and responsibilities as a student teacher. I used gestures and facial expressions to communicate to them. I learned basic Indonesian words and I never stop learning every day.

I can say that my stay here is really memorable and full of fun. I remember myself together with my two (2) fellow Sea Teachers helped weighing, packing, and counting all the meat that is to be distributed on the “feast of sacrifice” or Eidul Adha. It feels really good to be helpful to people. Truly, we had a lot of holidays and we tried lots of Indonesia’s savoury food like beef rendang, Arabic rice, lontong, sate, fried mushrooms that taste like fried chicken, several soups and not to forget that we drink tea almost every day. I also tasted the 86 year old Italian ice cream. We learned one traditional dance which is called “Sabilulungan” through the help of Bunda Ida a teacher in Sabilina Elementary School together with her daughter in which we are given the opportunity to perform it in front of our pupils parents on a weekend. Speaking of weekend, the teachers in Sabilina specially Ms. Syarah and Ms. Nurul always make it a point to tour us to several must visit places here in Indonesia. We visited Bogor where I saw the Presidents Palace, Kota Tua the old town of Indonesia, Monas the National Monument of Indonesia, the biggest Cathedral in Jakarta, Masjid Istiqlal the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia and we also visited Taman Mini.

I learned a lot in my short period of staying here. As a student teacher, I must be sociable and must easily adapt to new environment. I learned that communication serves as one of the prime factors to building a relationship with new people in new atmosphere. I also learned that no matter how diverse your cultures are, constant communication and open-mindedness absolutely break the barrier. Most of all, time alone does not make firm relationship between you and the others around you but time, respect and broadmindedness do.

I really consider myself lucky to be a part of this program where I met new people, lived in a new environment, made friends and made memories that I will surely treasure in my heart forever. The experiences which hone me to be who I am today and what I can be in the future, the skills that are enhanced for me to be a productive citizen, I owe all of those to the people who helped me in every way they can. I wanna thank UHAMKA and SABILINA for giving me the opportunity to showcase my talents and other skills in teaching. Truly, this is a wonderful experience.

  • Since I was assigned to learners which aged 4-5 years old, therefore I teach the 3 primary colors which are red, blue and yellow. I also teach the learners about shapes that are appropriate to their age, level and learning pace.

  • The teachers planned and prepared the activities that they will introduce to the learners because there is a teacher that is assigned to every center.
    • Preparing lessons and materials
  • In preparing lessons, they need to see to it that the activities or lesson will develop the child in the six programs that stated in their program which are physical, moral, cognitive, language, arts, and socio-emotional. For the materials, it is already prepared in which teachers just chose the materials inside the classroom that they will use in the lesson.


  • Teaching in class
  • Before teachers will start to teach, they will have a circle time to condition their mind and it is called ‘zero mind process .’ Teachers first have their greeting time on each other and then they will sing a song. The children and the teacher sat on a mat in a circle form. The teacher is all smiles while teaching the children which makes the learning environment friendly and non-threatening. Second, the teacher has changed of tone of voice just like when she is doing a storytelling.  In behaviour management, the teacher will get the attention of the learner. Teaching in class is more of a play that enable the children to have fun while learning. Teachers first introduced the activity like showing something that would represent the topic and from there she would start asking questions. Then, she will implement the lesson through different activities. While presenting the activity, teachers show, demonstrate and tell what to do. Then, lastly the .processing in which the teacher asked again the things they have learned.
    • Measurement and Evaluation
  • Children are evaluated through the activites given to them whether they can draw, color, paste and cut. Also the teacher will count the number of materials that the learner manipulated.

  • Teachers is very friendly to the children wherein they treat the learners as their children and also the teachers are close to each fellow teachers.

    • Procedures of Teaching
  • In teaching it should be carefully well-planned and prepared for a better delivery. I made and used activity plan to teach since they are kindergarten. Before I introduced the lesson, I greet the learners by saying it in Bahasa since I already know some of the greetings in Bahasa. The procedure of my teaching goes this way. My activity plan has three parts, first part is the introductory part, in here I introduced the activity either in a form of of a song, game, picture. It depends on how the teacher wants to introduce the lesson. In my first teaching I used a song to introduce the lesson then the second is by showing a picture. I asked the children to tell the kind of shapes that is being shown. Second is the implementation part in which in my first teaching is I grouped the learners and they will form the puzzle. My second teaching is I instruct the learners to jump if I say red, clap if I will say blue and stomp if I will say yellow. Third is the processing part in which I asked question if what did they learn .In my first teaching I showed pictures and real objects and they will tell the shape of it. My second teaching is I also showed pictures and real objects and they will tell the color of it.

Time management is an important aspect of teaching so that the teacher will ensure that all the parts of the lesson are able to discuss. I make a table to follow for my teaching.

  • Problem-solving
  • The problem that I encounter in teaching is about the language barrier because all of the learners don’t know how to speak and understand English language. But thankfully, I have the teacher to translate everything so that the learners will understand it. Moreover I also used gestures to teach the learners.
    • Classroom management
  • A good teacher must have the knowledge about classroom management. Based from my observation, children want to learn in a friendly classroom so I make sure that I have a cheerful disposition in class. I am smiling to them and appreciating their answers.




  1. Summary and Suggestions
    • Purposes of Practicum
  • There are so many reasons to join in this kind of program. First, through this program I can get experiences in other country based on their culture, religion, perspectives and others. I can learn on how to deal and handle young learners based on their different learning styles and behaviors. Moreover, I can develop my social skills and widen the friendship of Filipino people to Indonesian people. In addition to that, I can share may experiences, learning, teaching styles and the Philippine culture to Indonesia.
    • Procedures of Practicum
  • As I have my almost one (1) month practicum in Indonesia, there are some procedures that I have to follow based on the guidelines in the SEA Teacher Project. Wherein our first week is for observation. Second week is for assisting. Third week is for teaching and the last week is for evaluation.
    • Outcomes of Practicum
  • At the end of the practicum, I have so many experiences. I learned about the education system and teaching styles in Indonesia which they use in teaching. I also gained self-confidence in teaching and to be an independent individual. Another one is I learned on how to become more patient in handling the learners based on their behaviors and learning styles. Moreover I developed my social skills and make friend with Indonesian people despite of having a different culture and beliefs.
    • The challenges of practicum
  • There are a lot of challenges during my practicum in Indonesia such as learning their culture just like, I have to sit whenever I drink and others. Moreover about culture shock. Another one is the food that we ate, knowing that Indonesia loves to eat spicy foods. Especially language barrier because some of them don‘t know how to speak English. However, despite all of these challenges I overcome, adjust, experienced and learned a lot of things that I will treasure for the rest of my life.


  • Overall impression
  • In my almost one (1) one month of staying here in Indonesia, I developed and enhanced some of my personalities to be a better teacher. Just like having patience with the pupils eventhough they are naughty. In addition to that is to be strong in every struggles and problems that I may encounter because my parents were not here to helped and guide me. I also learned to become more independent in every way because not all the time there is someone to help me. Moreover, I went to beautiful places in Indonesia. I also learned to speak some of the Bahasa words in Indonesia.


  • Suggestions for future improvement
  • I would like to suggest that the school should communicate always with the sending university because we have a conflict in the schedule. They thought that we will stay there until September 20, 2018. But we settled it immediately and organize the events into earlier time frame.

Flying Back Home

Visiting the Public Speaking Class of Ma’am Syarah

The pupils at the public speaking class of ma’am Syarah are Grades 5 and 6. We are here today to help boost their confidence in speaking the English language. Some are shy at first but became active in asking questions as the conversation went on. We told them that we are going home the next day so they asked why do we have to go? They still want to spend time with us. I smiled and answered, that they shouldn’t worry because someday in the future we will meet again. After the session, we are asked to go to the principals office and we are grateful for the presents they gave us.

Farewell Party

September 4,2018

I woke up feeling different emotions today. I’m happy but at the same time wondering why staying here is like a blink of an eye. I wore my yellow and green Filipiñana. Bunda Imaz, our principal and the founder Ibu Maftu have been teary-eyed giving their messages to us. Telling us that they wish us well and that we will be successful teachers in the future. I’d be lying if I say I didn’t cry hearing their messages. The pupils entertained us through a dance number and I was wondering how i didn’t see them practicing the dance the time i was here. I even cried when I watched the video they made for us. I didn’t know they were taking photos and recording our activities here. They gave us presents. I was moved because they know each one’s favorite color. We hugged our teachers and said our goodbye’s to our pupils. I met the student teachers from UHAMKA, our receiving university.

All of us formed a bond that I know will never break although we are going to be apart and not see each other as often as before. We found a family at Sabilina. And yes I left a part of my heart here.

Class Visit

September 3,2018

It’s a good day to talk with the pupils at Sabilina Elementary School today. Ma’am Syarah arranged a 30 minute talk with the pupils of the assigned sections of Sabilina Elementary School.

The purpose of this is to enhance their English speaking skills and to eliminate their fear of talking the said language. Pupils eagerly and actively asked questions to me like, what’s my favorite indonesian food, place and what are the indonesian words I know. They also asked about my country, the Philippines like what is the curriculum we are using. Some of the students even gave me a letter saying they will miss me. 1 section even asked for my signature.

I enjoyed all the conversations i had with them. I hope to see those kids being successful in their chosen careers in the future. I know they will.

My Last Sunday in Indonesia

September 2,2018

We went to the church at 7:30 because the mass will start at 8:00am and ends at 9:30. After that we are picked up by the Hana and Miss Irma.

Today we are going to Taman Mini also called as the miniature of Indonesia. Taman mini consist of villages and temple that represents all the provinces in Indonesia. One day isn’t enough to visit all the places here. It was really wide and at the same time magnificent. We are accompanied by our teachers. We talk about a lot of things and they also have a good sense of humor. We went to a souvenir shop and bought things there.

We woke up early this day and drove to Jakarta to avoid the traffic jam. It feels like a family day out because we are with the school founder’s family. We brought food like kebab and fried noodles. When we arrived at ASIAN games venue we bought ticket so we can enter. The ticket should be worn like a bracelet. The first thing I saw is the statue of the First President of Indonesia which is Ir. Soekarno. We roam around and I saw the Asian Games Flame, we rode the free bus that takes you around the venue. Good thing we rode it because the area is really wide and it will be really tiring if we walk.

At lunch time we went to where the food stalls are. They sell a lot of Indonesian food but we chosed to try the famous Indomie. A spicy noodle which is cheap in price. I tried buying foods by speaking Bahasa Indonesia. After eating and because it’s really getting hot in the area and I feel like i’ve been tossed into the oven like literally we all agreed to go home. This day was fun for !

Today I’m gonna teach with my fellow sea teachers as a group.

Activity Plan

Concept: Loco Motor and Non-Loco Motor Movements

Title of the Activity: Let’s Dance and Sing

Skills to be developed:

Language Arts

-Identify the different loco motor and non-loco motor movements such as clapping, stomping,swinging their arms, jumping, and shaking their hips.

-sing the song accurately


-Dance and sing with other children

-Follow instructions

Fine and Gross Motor Skills

-Execute the different movements like clapping, stomping, swinging their arms, and shaking their hips

Learning Area: Outdoor

Materials Needed: Laptop and Speaker



1. The teacher will present an energizer for the pupils.

2. The teacher will introduce Loco-Motor and Non-loco Motor movements.

3. The Teacher will execute some of the Loco-Motor and Non-Loco Motor movements.


4. The teacher will execute the Loco-Motor and Non-Loco motor movements together with the pupils

5. The teacher will ask the pupils to execute a certain movement.


6. The teacher will play the song and will execute the movements together with the pupils.

7. The teacher will group the pupils. Each group will dance using the movements presented to them accompanied by a song.

8. The teacher and the pupils will dance all together.

And because every Friday is a fun day, the teachers asked us to lead one more dance. We said yes . We are accompanied by the song Meraih Bintang, it was a good song. Indeed friday is a fun day for all of us!
